so far the romney and ryan people have not been willing to stand up for the things that they have been espousing a long time. i think there's more pressure on paul ryan than vice president ryan. >> we will be watching your state tomorrow. thanks so much for coming on the program. >> thank you. >> let me bring susan back. you tweeted earlier today the vp debates usually don't matter. but is this one different? >> i think it is a little different. do i. you know, traditionally we pay a lot of attention to the debates. lloyd bentsen putting down dan quayle and became inaugurated as vice president that january. it was dan quayle. this time maybe a little different because this election so close. so newly close. because we have got what i have been calling momentum politics, momentum is on the republican side. can joe biden turn that around in the debate and set a better stage for the second presidential debate that we have next week in new york? >> momentum is so important. i think that -- you know, besides the fact you have two debaters who are both really pretty substantive guys, i mean,

not a day has gone by without a stop by ryan or romney in the buckeye state. he visited a soup kitchen in youngstown where he held a town hall. romney held rallies in lebanon, ohio. >> i need you to get other people that voted for barack obama to join our team. we need ohio. if we get ohio, we'll be able to take back america. >> but can romney win this election without ohio? this was ohio senator's rob portman's take on sunday. >> look, you can probably win the presidency without ohio but i wouldn't want to take the risk. no republican has. >> well, let's look at the map. we might as well. rob portman asked us to do it so let's do it. let's give the president ohio. that puts him up to 255. the two other states where he's ahead, that means he would win florida, all of the southern states. he's at 248. give him the west, colorado, nevada, he is still short and needs to find seven others. right now the president is ahead in wisconsin and i haven't seen evidence otherwise. the president appears to be ahead in new hampshire. so look what that leaves us. 269. well,

and the problem, you talked about the chameleon nature of mitt romney, paul ryan is not one. he is going to have to hold to these very tough principles. so you're going to have to hear ryan explain his medicare/medicaid policy. and what he has going for him, he didn't seem to do much of a dent, at all. we'll see how the polls go this week. and he is going, president obama, monday, to california for caesar chavez. he signed an executive order to say this is where chavez is buried. it is going to be part of our national park service. >> where -- >> yeah, it is la paz, and he will be there with the widow of caesar cheavez, the widow. and mitt romney screwed up, when he was a let hard on the mexican-american vote. you see president obama making a big play with ken salazar, the hispanic, and the whole clan. watch for the sound bite to be very moving. >> do you think -- >> paul ryan has -- is an intellect, and joe biden is a consummate pro. so i think you will see a really spirited one. so you will have joe biden throwing punches and paul ryan punching back. and in fact, if you're
